Made possible
at Birkbeck
Impact of Philanthropy report 2023/24
Welcome
During my first year as Vice-Chancellor at Birkbeck, it has been a real pleasure to meet so many of our community of alumni and supporters, who are committed to bringing about transformative and positive change.
Our supporters are integral to our commitment to ensuring access to higher education, supporting our diverse and talented students and enhancing our world-leading research. This support and generosity is enabling us to thrive.
I would like to thank our volunteers – of which there are more than 600 – who have contributed a staggering 5,663 hours of their time over the past year to work with our students.
It is wonderful to see your dedication to supporting student success and in helping them make the most of their time at university as they embark on their future careers.
Birkbeck is now in its third century of teaching, and we are continuing to ensure all those who study with us have access to everything they need to succeed.
We are part-way through a project to install technology into all out of our classrooms which allows students to join teaching sessions online and take part in them fully alongside those on campus.
This technology is particularly important for students who are time poor and who have a variety of different needs. Its installation across Birkbeck’s estate will help to cement our position as one of the most inclusive and flexible universities in the UK.
Without your philanthropic support, our plans and successes to fulfil the needs of our students would not have been possible.
In this report, you will hear from our Foundation Year Success Bursary recipient Ravea Khatun about how studying at Birkbeck is enabling her to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher.
You will learn how students from disadvantaged backgrounds are being supported to build successful careers in technology thanks to an award-winning Birkbeck programme and you will gain an insight into the achievements of our fantastic Goldman Sachs scholars.
All these activities and achievements – and many more - have been supported by those of you whose generosity enables great innovation.
I hope that you enjoy reading about the impact you are having by supporting Birkbeck.
Thank you for being such an important part of our Birkbeck community.
Professor Sally Wheeler, Vice-Chancellor of Birkbeck
